Though the prices of onions across the country are skyrocketing, Hyderabadis can breath easy for the time being as local traders do not see any rise in onion prices in the next few days. On the other hand, prices of tomato are on the rise. Tomato on Wednesday touched Rs 50 per kg. Even in rythu bazaars, tomato is being soled at `40 a kg.
In fact, traders from Malakpet onion wholesale market claim that the prices of onion will fall after Diwali. However, traders from Monda market believe that tomato prices may continue to pinch consumers.
“Though the prices of onion for the last two months are between Rs 50 and Rs 60, there is slim chance of them going beyond as the market has enough stock,” says onion wholesaler D Shivkumar of Malakpet. The market trend is indicating that there will be a fall in the prices of onion after Diwali, he pointed out.
The prices of onion shot up in retail markets across India. On Wednesday, 1 kg of onion was sold at Rs 85-90 in Delhi and other metros.
At present, in Hyderabad grade I onions from Nasik is being sold at Rs 50 to Rs 60, Karnataka onions at Rs 40-50 and Kurnool onions at Rs 30-40 a kg. “We do not see any rise in onion price in the city. As for tomatoes, the position is critical with sufficient supplies not reaching the city.
