'Proper diet, exercise and insulin a must for diabetic'

Dr Ashok, Kumar Das, head of the department endocrinology at JIPMER (Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research), said that every diabetic patient should be given customised treatment by taking into account various factors like age, sex, weight, race, ethnicity and others while addressing the inaugural session of the two-day 7th National Insulin Summit (NIS) here on Saturday.

Dr Das, who is also the executive patron at the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India, said that intake of insulin during the initial stages after diagnosing diabetes will arrest the progress of the disease. He opined that if a person starts taking insulin at the chronic stage of the disease, it would not yield expected results.

Underlining the importance proper diet, involving regular physical exercises and insulin as prescribed, Dr Das, who was also a past national president for the Association for Physicians of India (API), highlighted the importance of the above three factors, describing them as the ‘three horses of life chariot’ for a diabetic.

“If any one of these three horses lags behind, the chariot will not move forward any further”, he said. Dr Das gave his presentation during the inaugural session of the NIS organised by the Indian College of Physicians, the academic wing of the API in association with Novo Nordisk on the theme “Individualising treatment to delay the progress of diabetes”.

Vice-chancellor of the Tamil Nadu-based Dr MGR Medical University, Prof D Santharam said that diabetic diseases strike the most productive years of a human being and is similar to an epidemic affecting millions of people across the continents.

Another eminent diabetologist, Dr S Kumar said that despite everyday progress in providing treatment to diabetic patients, they are not being able to restrict the progress of the disease in about two-third of the patients visiting hospitals.

National president of API, A Muruganathan and eminent diabetologists Dr Binode Kumar Sahay, Dr Shashi Bhushan Gupta, Dr Shaukat, M Sadikot, Dr Siddharth Shah, Dr V Seshiah and hundreds of delegates arrived from across the globe to attend the talk.
