Thanks to Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), drinking water problem in Serilingampally circle of the GHMC would be solved by next year as the Centre gave a green signal to fund the project.
The Central Sanctioning Monitoring Committee (CSMC) has cleared the Comprehensive Water Supply Scheme for Serilingampally circle at a cost of Rs 439.51 crore under the transition phase of JNNURM recently. The project would be implemented by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB).
The works sanctioned will ensure better service delivery, replacement of old pipelines and improving water pressure in pipelines.
Of the Rs 439,51 crore, the Centre will provide Rs 172,73 crore (35 percent share), state government will bear Rs 74,02 crore (15 percent while the HMWS&SB share would provide Rs 246.75 crore (50 percent).
People in the Serilingampally municipal circle are facing untold hardships as they are getting drinking water twice a week or once in four days due to lack of distribution network.
The circle has no adequate storage capacity or proper feeder network and inadequate distribution network.
The earlier network was developed to provide Public Stand Posts (PSPs) and the pipes have become weak and old, which need to be replaced.
The water board officials told Express that the erstwhile municipal circle has been taken over by the HMWS&SB after formation of GHMC. The actual operation of water supply system was taken over by the Water Board during 2012.
Previously HMWS&SB used to provide bulk supplies and the distribution was with the municipal circle.
Instead of GHMC, the state government directed the water board to provide water to municipal circle area on par with core areas of twin cities.
The geographical area of Serilingampally circle is about 96.99 sq.km with present supply of 1 Mld (9 Mgd) to about 34,679 connections having a population of about 5,45,500. The ground water is said to polluted as the circle is nearer to the industrial cluster.
As per the DPR proposals, Serilingampally circle requires storage reservoirs of 30.10 ML. Nearly 22.02 km of Trunk Feeder Mains have been proposed while 875 km distribution mains are required.
The main components of the project include- water supply trunk feeder mains to proposed reservoirs and trunk mains from reservoirs (Rs 21.99 crore), construction of RCC ELSRs/sumps in 9 WS zones (Rs 26.86 crore), water supply distribution network in 9 zones (Rs 343.18 crore), house service connections (Rs 32.60 crore) and towards contingencies, administrative charges, consultancy fee etc (Rs 14.86 crore).
