The drinking water woes in LB Nagar Circle of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will be solved by next year with the central government giving green signal to fund the project under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

The Central Sanctioning Monitoring Committee (CSMC) has cleared the Comprehensive Water Supply Scheme project for LB Nagar circle at a cost of Rs 365.17 crore under the Transition Phase of JNNURM last month. It will be implemented by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB).

Of the Rs 365.17 crore, the central government will provide Rs 127.81 crore (35 pc share), the state government Rs 54.67 crore (15 pc) and the HMWS&SB Rs 182.58 crore (50 pc).

About 678.87 km distribution main lines will be laid followed by strengthening of storage reservoirs by about 24.40 MLD and laying of 18.72 km trunk feeder mains in the circle. The circle will have equitable supply in the distribution network, unserved areas will be covered with piped water supply and better service delivery to the customers.

Currently, the LB Nagar municipal circle does not have proper distribution supply lines. With the project getting sanctioned under the JNNURM, consumers will benefit to a large extent.  The circle has no adequate storage capacities or proper feeder network for water supply, inadequate distribution network without reliability.

HMWS&SB officials told Express that the erstwhile municipal circle had been taken over by HMWS&SB after formation of GHMC. The actual operation of water supply system was taken over by the Water Board  during 2012.

The geographical area of LB Nagar circle is about 57.14 sq.km with 5.35 alkh population, the present supply is about 54.54 Mld to about 89,510 water connections. The ground water is said to polluted as the circle is nearer to the industrial cluster.

As per the DPR proposals, LB Nagar circle needs construction of GLSR’s /sumps/pump room etc (Rs 5.73 crore), Construction of RCC ELSRs in 9 WS zones (Rs 20.47 crore), Water supply trunk feeder mains to proposed reservoirs (Inlets) and trunk mains from reservoirs (Outlets)-Rs 33.68 crore. Water supply distribution network in 11 zones and providing house service connections (Rs 352.82 crore) and towards contingencies, administrative charges, consultancy fee etc (Rs 12.34 crore).
