HYDERABAD: The Telangana Excise Department has set a new deadline for the distillery companies, retail liquor shops and bars to install the advanced bar coding and tracking system introduced by the department and asked them to finish the process by November 30.

“Distillery companies and shops which violate these rules will be sealed,” said an excise official. Though the project was launched by the united Andhra Pradesh government in 2012, it is yet to take off in both the states.

According to the guidelines, the distillery companies should replace the paper logos with 2D holograms. The retail liquor shops and bars should purchase a computer, scanner and printer so that information of liquor products and sales would be recorded by scanning the holograms.

Maintaining the records of every liquor product they receive from excise depots and sell to customers, generating bills for every sale and adhering to he MRP prices were also among the guidelines. The department is aiming at controlling the supply of illicit liquor in the State from neighbouring states like Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh and bringing transparency in the supply chain of liquor,” explained a senior official.

Every liquor bottle manufactured in the 15 distillery companies in Telangana will carry a 2D hologram with six layers of security system which will contain all the information of the product. Different holograms will be given to the case of liquor bottles and the container as well. Before the liquor bottle reaches the customers, the liquor products will be scanned in three stages.

The data from scanners will be sent to the State data centre (SDC) at Madhapur. Any mismatch in the data can lead to seizure of liquor shops and distillery units. The department handed over this project to a private firm USC to maintain the tracking system. A GPS tracker will track movement of vehicles.
