HYDERABAD: As the online registration for Common Admission Test (CAT) is set to begin from Thursday, the new pattern is raising hopes among the non-engineering students.

Unlike previous pattern with two sections, the new question paper would consist of three sections. The paper will consists  of three sections -  quantitative aptitude (QA), data interpretation, logical reasoning (DILR) and Verbal & Reading Comprehension (VRC). The combination of topics in each section provides an opportunity for non-engineering students to get a reasonable score. This time the students will also be allowed to use online calculators in the exam. This will enable the students to save few minutes on calculations.

Experts said the pattern for CAT 2015 has been changed to provide an equal opportunity for students from all streams. For the first time, descriptive questions were added to the question paper. However, these questions will not carry any negative marks for wrong answers.

Krishna,  a CAT coaching faculty at Career Launcher, Hyderabad said, “The introduction of descriptive type of questions will give non-engineers a better chance to crack the exam.” He said there has always been a notion that only engineers can achieve good score in CAT. But now the authorities are trying to change it. This changes in pattern will definitely bring diversity among students and it will reduce the dominance of engineering graduates in the exam, he added.

Key Changes

  •  There will be three sections in the test instead of two.
  •  Candidates can’t switch from one sections to another during the test.
  •  Duration has been increased to 180 minutes from the  earlier 170 minutes.
