23 More Lakes to be Notified for Protection from Encroachment

Full tank level maps of 438 lakes prepared; people can file objections on FTL boundaries to HMDA before Feb 19

HYDERABAD: To protect water bodies from encroachment, the Lake Protection Committee of Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority will notify another 23 lakes soon for protection. The HMDA has earlier notified 415 lakes in 12 phases. The HMDA has prepared full tank level (FTL) maps for the 438 notified lakes and water bodies.

The 23 lakes notified for protection in the 13th phase are Tattianaram Kunta and Chinna Cheruvu in Hayathnagar mandal, Chinna Damera Cheruvu, Dundigal Lake and Anthireddy Kunta, Bachupally in Quthbullapur mandal, Kandal Kunta, Nadergul and Suddhavini Kunta (Saroornagar), Shameerpet Tank (Shameerpet mandal) and Suryanarayana Cheruvu in Keesara mandal.

Bandhamkunta, Mondi Kunta, Jagamma Kunta, Kotha Kunta, Puli Cheruvu Kunta, Madigala Kunta, Nagula Kunta, Burugu Kunta, Nallavani Kunta, Chinta Ralekunta, Pagidivani Kunta, Kusaravi Kunta, Pedda Kunta, Yellama cheruvu and Donthula Cheruvu all in Medchal mandal.

The HMDA, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), and irrigation and revenue departments are demarcating and fixing the FTL boundaries and preparing the lake maps.

HMDA officials told Express that citizens having objections and suggestions, if any, on the FTL boundaries fixed by the LPC can be submit them before February 19 to HMDA Metropolitan Commissioner at the HMDA office at Tarnaka or to member-environment and LPC convener in Buddha Purnima Building, Tank Bund Road or email to me@hmda.gov.in or director_lpc@hmda.gov.in. Objections and suggestions received if any on the notified FTL boundaries and buffer zone of lakes will be examined and a final notification will be issued by the state government.

Demarcation of FTL boundaries has been completed in respect of 521 lakes in coordination with irrigation and revenue departments. FTL demarcation of the other lakes situated within the Outer Ring Road (ORR) will be completed shortly. Similarly, the demarcation of FTL boundaries and preparation of lake maps for 2,402 lakes situated outside the ORR is going on and will take some more time to complete.

As per the data available with HMDA, there are 2,857 lakes within HMDA limits _ 168  in GHMC limits and 2,689 in gram panchayats and municipalities outside Greater Hyderabad.   The LPC’s main role is listing of lakes in HMDA area, FTL demarcation, protection of FTL area from encroachment and conducting awareness campaign for protection of the lakes.
