Aryabhatta Awards for Navalgund, Avinash Chander

HYDERABAD: Dr Ranganath R Navalgund, a Vikram Sarabhai Distinguished Professor and former DRDO chief Dr Avinash Chander have been selected for the prestigious Aryabhata Award for 2012 and 2013 respectively.

The award consists of a citation and `1 lakh in cash. Astronautical Society of India (ASI) made this announcement here on Tuesday. Dr Avinash Chander has been conferred the Aryabhata Award for his contribution to aeronautics and astronautics in India. He is considered as the chief architect of long range missiles and steered the maiden three missions of ICBM Agni V. Dr P P Mohanlal (ISRO) and BHVS Narayan Murthy, of Research Centre Imarat (RCI/ DRDO) have won the ASI awards for 2012 and 2013 respectively in rocket and related technologies.

The ASI gives these awards in the name of the 5th century Indian Astronomer and Mathematician Aryabhata. India’s first satellite which was launched in 1975 was also named after him.

The ASI presents these awards annually to an individual for outstanding lifetime contribution to the promotion of astronautics in India.

BHVS Narayana Murthy, a noted scientist and associate director at research centre Imarat, Hyderabad, has been conferred with rocketry and related technologies award for his contribution in development of state-of-the-art real time on-board mission computers, real time software. He is also known for his remarkable work in other avionics technologies for numerous Indian missiles and other aerospace applications.
