HYDERABAD:A day after Kukatpally assistant commissioner of police(ACP) N Sanjeeva Rao was arrested by the sleuths attached to the ACB, more skeletons started tumbling out of the cupboard, indicating that the cop has amassed wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income.

ACB sources said they have received evidences regarding land holdings in Nalgonda, particularly during the last 24 hours. “We have information that the accused owns around 200 acres of land. We are in the process of ascertaining the facts,” sources told Express.

Having recovered two bank passbooks of Sanjeeva Rao pertaining to branches outside the state, officials are collecting evidences regarding his financial transactions. Meanwhile, an ACB team landed at the doorstep of Sanjeeva Rao’s daughter-in-law in Alwal here on Sunday. It may be noted that Sanjeeva Rao’s daughter is married to the son of Telangana TDP leader Errabelli Dayakar Rao’s brother.

“We did not raid their residence. It was part of our standard investigation procedure to find out the expenditure incurred for the wedding, and to verify whether he has registered properties in their name,” a senior officer told Express.

The police officer, who has a ‘bad reputation’ in the department, is expected to be placed under suspension on completion of 48-hour custody.

The ACB team investigating the disproportionate assets case against ACP Sanjeeva Rao is planning to search his bank lockers and start the procedure for freezing his accounts on Monday.

Rao had earlier served as DSP of ACB in Nizamabad district for over a year. All the cases he has handled in the past, particularly the ACB cases, are likely to be brought under the scanner. The ACB has received as many as 8 complaints about his activities during the last 10 months and has been keeping an eye on him for the last 6 months.

The sleuths had unearthed documents pertaining to disproportionate assets worth `13 crore in the form of jewellery, land, commercial complexes and flats, in a raid on the premises of Sanjeeva Rao on Saturday.

Officials however maintained that the in-laws of Sanjeeva Rao’s daughter have claimed ignorance about the benami properties registered in their names.

Rao (54), who joined service as sub-inspector in 1989, has served in Adilabad, Karimnagar and Khammam districts apart from serving in Transco for two-and-a half years. It was only 9 months ago that Rao was posted as ACP of Kukatpally division in Cyberabad, which is learnt to be his first posting in the capital city. Born in a middle-class family to a freedom-fighter father, Rao inherited only 2 acres of land.
