HYDERABAD: Protesting against the expulsion of 11 students for alleged violation of disciplinary norms, the student union at English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), along with other student groups on the campus, has threatened to boycott classes and stage a dharna in front of the university gate.
Demanding revocation of the action taken against the students, the union on Thursday gave a call for indefinite protests if the administration did not accept their demand.
According to EFLU Student Union president Tony Sebastian, 11 students (four research scholars, five post-graduate students and two graduate students) were expelled from their hostels on November 5 last year. They were accused of participating in a protest on the campus in October and disturbing the university’s academic atmosphere.
Citing violation of disciplinary norms, the university’s proctorial board barred three of the 11 expelled students from entering the university campus before 9 am and after 6 pm. They were also barred from using facilities on the campus such as library, sports equipment, reading room and mess.
The scholarship of expelled PhD students was also suspended, the student union said and alleged that the action had been taken without conducting any probe. The administration, however, denied the student union’s allegations. University proctor Prakash Kona said students had been served showcause notices before the action was taken. “Students violated the disciplinary norms by staging protests in aggressive tone. We have called them for a fresh hearing on Monday,” he added.
