HYDERABAD: Finally, the State government has handed over the responsibility of maintaining country’s largest tricolour at Sanjeevaiah Park in the city to Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (HMDA).

A memo was issued by general administration department recently directing HMDA metropolitan commissioner T Chiranjeevulu to take over the maintenance and upkeep of the national flag.

However, HMDA is yet to take over the responsibility, citing staff crunch.

The State government has constituted an Oversight Committee to monitor and maintain the flag. The committee is headed by MA&UD special chief secretary, MG Gopal. GHMC commissioner, HMDA metropolitan commissioner, Hyderabad district collector, city commissioner of police and executive engineer (R&B) are members of the committee.

The committee will meet on June 18 at Sanjeevaiah Park to discuss the maintenance of the national flag.

Sources told Express that maintenance of the national flag is a crucial job and requires constant monitoring. At least 20 persons are required to hoist and lower the flag as it is very heavy.

Though there is an up-roller system to hoist the flag, there is no mechanism to bring down the flag.
