Notes From a Fort

HYDERABAD: Design label Blueprint’s latest collection Gaatha is all about balancing fluidity and androgyny. Founded in 2011, the label from designer sisters Navya and Divya Niranjan distinguishes itself with uncommon prints and structured silhouettes. “Our designs are an ongoing dialogue with fashion and art,” says Navya (34). Divya (31) tells us how the duo was inspired by the art and architecture of the Amber Fort in Jaipur for their new designs. “We had blocks finely handcrafted by artisans in Benares based on our sketches.”

These one-of-a-kind blocks were then employed in the printing of fine silk-cotton yardage for Gaatha. “Silk-cotton and hand-woven pochampally ikat fabrics from Andhra Pradesh are used extensively in our summer collection.” Expect an earthy palette of colours from dark chocolate, indigo to red in this assortment of dresses, tunics, crop jackets, culottes and more. Although the collection is inspired by menswear staples, the fabrics bring an inherent softness to the clothes.

“These ikats have traditional geometric patterns. The colours and the apparent blurriness of the fabric made it perfect for these masculine silhouettes,” explains Navya. Divya adds that the embroidery is all done by hand.

The juxtaposition of the subtle metallic detailing and the contemporary silhouettes is sometimes modern, even futuristic but eye-catching.

Of note are the monochrome maxi dress with ruffles, the striped, structured day dress which is an ode to French designer Roland Mouret and the dark brown jacket with power shoulders. Since its inception in May 2011 the siblings’ sartorial venture includes clientele like Sonam Kapoor, Taapsee Pannu and Sarah Jane Diaz.

Currently available online, Navya who has an advertising background, says that they plan to be available in boutiques in the city soon.

“Sky is the limit for Blueprint! We hope our designs travel the world and share our story about the strong and sophisticated individual,” smiles Divya who has honed her skills under Chennai designer, Rehane Yavar Dhala.
