HYDERABAD: THE Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) wants the state government to amend laws under WALTA Act and make mandatory for land owners having an area of 100 sq.mts to compulsorily construct Rain Water Harvesting Structure (RWHS) on their premises.
Presently, land owners having an area of 300 sq.mts should mandatorily construct rainwater harvesting pits as per the government orders issued on June 30, 2000.
APPOINT HIGH-LEVEL COMMITTEE
To recharge the groundwater by preserving the rain water and construction of RWHS pits in Greater Hyderabad limits, GHMC commissioner Janardhan Reddy has requested the state government to appoint a high-level committee and has already sent proposals to the government in this regard.
To ensure the construction of RWHS pits programme, the high -level committee, if appointed, would give suggestions and guidance, he said while reviewing status of RWHS in the city on Saturday. Janardhan Reddy said most of the RWHS pits constructed by GHMC in government offices, parks, open spaces, schools, colleges, playgrounds have become defunct and are not functioning properly.
RESTORE DEFUNCT HARVESTING PITS
The civic body commissioner directed the deputy municipal commissioners to initiate steps to restore at least 100 defunct RWHS pits in their circles on priority basis. They should also hold talks with colony welfare associations for restoring defunct RWHS pits in their respective colony premises, he added.
