9 agencies to work together to control flow of drugs

Raids on drugs and narcotics peddlers in TS and investigation thereafter will no more be limited to Telangana Prohibition and Excise department or other law enforcement agencies.

HYDERABAD: Raids on drugs and narcotics peddlers in TS and investigation thereafter will no more be limited to Telangana Prohibition and Excise department or other law enforcement agencies. State and Central level agencies will work in tandem to act swiftly and control the flow of narcotics into Hyderabad and other districts. The decision was taken at a coordination meeting held here on Tuesday between nine agencies which are involved in tackling crimes related to drugs and narcotics.

Besides, flow of new psychoactive substances was discussed. Officials who were part of the meeting said that by tweaking chemical formula of existing narcotics and psychotropic substances, new substance can be manufactured. In fact, when sleuths of Excise department caught one peddler, they came across such situation. When they will find a new substance, it will be included in the list of banned substances.

In the recent drugs and narcotics seizures which started on July 2, which led to arrest of many narcotics peddlers, most of the raids were taken up by sleuths of TS Prohibition and Excise department. The details of those raids were shared with Narcotics Control Bureau and other agencies. Director of State Excise department’s Enforcement wing Akun Sabharwal said if one agency opines that other agency can assist in doing a better job, information will be shared. “Let’s say one agency receives information that a company is manufacturing contraband. Excise officials might not readily recognise illegal manufacturing. However, if Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officials is part of the raid, the job becomes easy,” an official said.
