Patients want all fans checked in post-op ward at Koti Maternity hospital in Hyderabad

Other patients and their attendants in the Post Operative Green Unit were in a state of anxiety and wanted all fans to be checked.

HYDERABAD: Had it been a few seconds this way or that, the ceiling fan in the Post Operative Ward at Government Maternity Hospital in Koti would have fallen straight on Mamatha and her four day- old child. Unable to come out of the shock, the young mother says: “I covered my child with my body immediately after the fan fell down. I don’t remember anything after that.” Meanwhile, a traumatised Anasuya, Mamatha’s mother, says: “I remained still after the fan fell on me.

I do not remember anything apart from intense pain. I was lying beside my daughter’s bed and all through the night she cried in pain as a wing of the fan had hit her leg. From 3.30 a.m, I felt nauseous and started to vomit till 5 am.” Speaking about the incident, a family member says: “Had Anasuya not been there, the fan would have definitely fallen on Mamatha and her child.” Unfortunately, Anasuya was not attended by the hospital authorities till Sunday afternoon.

The couple had come to the hospital from their home town in Rangareddy district. DME intervenes, minor repairs to be taken up When tried to contact the superintendent of the hospital Dr. Shailaja, she was not available at the hospital and neither did she respond to calls or messages when she was contacted to inform about the issue. Other patients and their attendants in the Post Operative Green Unit were in a state of anxiety and wanted all fans to be checked.

When Express alerted Telangana Director of Medical Education (DME) Dr. K Ramesh Reddy, he immediately instructed the staff to take Anasuya to Osmania General Hospital for a check up and brain CT-Scan. “The patient is stable but I have passed instructions to conduct all tests on her. Also, I have asked the Telangana State Medical Services and Infrastructure Development Corporation to take up minor repairs. The budget for it has been already sanctioned,” said Dr Ramesh Reddy.
