HYDERABAD: The Peace International School managing director MM Akbar, infamously known as Kerala’s Zakir Naik, was detained by Immigration Department officials at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) on Sunday. He was nabbed based on an alert issued by the Interpol and Telangana State Intelligence.Akbar had been absconding ever since Kerala police registered criminal cases against him for promoting communal hatred by preaching objectionable content through his school syllabus. He was handed over to state police for temporary custody. A team of police from Kerala would arrive on Monday to take over his custody.
Sources say Akbar was allegedly promoting communal violence in Kerala by exposing children of his school to activities of the banned terrorist organisation ISIS. He fled to Dubai after Kerala Police filed cases against him in 2016 and raided his premises. The police then sought the help of Interpol to nab the accused and the latter issued a lookout notice against Akbar.
“We received reports that Akbar was travelling from Australia to Dubai. The flight made a transit halt in Hyderabad and Akbar was to catch the connecting flight on Monday,” say intelligence sources. According to reports, Interpol alerted the State police who, with the help of immigration officials, detained Akbar at the airport.
