HYDERABAD: Once himself a victim of job fraud, a 30-year-old Talwinder alias Amanweet Pal Sidhu turned into a notorious fraudster cheating people across the country. His modus operandi was simple: publish advertisements in leading newspapers offering lucrative job opportunities, zero-in on targets, call them to Delhi for ‘interview’, and cheat them. He was arrested by the Rachakonda cybercrime police on Thursday and recovered `16,84,300 cash and 15 tolas of gold jewellery from Singh
Singh had been duped of `2.50 lakh which reportedly forced him to take the convoluted path of crime in 2012.

The accused would invite people to Delhi on the pretext of providing jobs abroad and then looted them of their gold, valuables and even money from their accounts, after drugging them, said Rachakonda police commissioner Mahesh Bhagwat. His fraudulent activities came to fore after a city-based techie fell into his trap and travelled to Delhi, only to be duped of `19 lakh cash and around 10 tolas of gold jewellery that she had saved for her wedding.

While in Telangana, apart from the female techie, a couple from Mahabubnagar district fell into his trap, several other jobless persons from across the country have been his victim.

Target practice

According to police, Talvinder published ads in leading newspapers offering jobs abroad. He zeroed in on most women with strong financial background and called them for an interview to Delhi. Once the victims reached Delhi, he provided them accommodation and conducted an interview, all the while convincing them to withdraw money from their account on the pretext of visa processing. In this way, he would even collect their debit cards and the PIN number too.

After collecting the required information, he would drug them using sedative-laced food and loot their jewellery, cash and debit cards. He was once arrested in 2012 but had come out on bail soon.
