HYDERABAD: At a time when the Telangana State prisons department is walking the path of reformation of prisoners and also seen a downfall in deaths inside the prison barracks, an alleged suicide inside the Chanchalguda central prison on Monday has shocked the officials of the department.VV Srihari, son of VV Anjanayelu, committed suicide near a barrack in the early hours of Monday. He had been arrested by the Chadarghat police and lodged in the prison on judicial remand on May 18.

According to officials of the prison department, Srihari hanged himself from the ventilator in the washroom. Officials rushed him to Osmania General Hospital but the doctors there declared him dead. “He went out in the early hours of Monday, saying that he wanted to use the washroom. He bolted himself in and used available objects to commit suicide,” a senior official of the prisons department said.

A native of Nawabpet in Mahbubnagar, Srihari had earlier been charged under Sections 302 and 307 of IPC for beating and killing his mother and injuring his brother with an intention to kill. Later, he moved to the city and was again charged under IPC Sections 467 and 511 in a case of property dispute with his family members. “His behaviour was normal and was imparting education to fellow prisoners,” said Arjun Rao, superintendent of Chanchalguda prison.

The prisons department, of late, has been recording a reduction in the prisoners' death rate.
Director-general of prisons VK Singh said, “Nobody could have stopped the suicide. He had killed his own mother and, out of remorse, revolted against himself and killed himself.”
