HYDERABAD: The misuse of neurotransmitter oxytocin, that is often used to boost milk production in cattle, might come down soon. The manufacture and sale of this drug have been banned for domestic use in the private sector by the government, starting from July 1. Import of the drug has also been banned. Oxytocin is a vital drug used to stop bleeding during childbirth.

Earlier, a gazette notification issued on April 27 stated that the oxytocin in any form shall not be allowed to be sold through retail chemist. Formulations meant for domestic consumption will be supplied by  Karnataka Antibiotics & Pharmaceuticals Ltd (KAPL), to the registered hospitals and clinics directly.
The drug is commonly used to boost milk production in cows. This milk, when consumed by humans, causes a variety of health complications starting from hormonal imbalance. While sources in Drug Control Administration (DCA) said that the restrictions will help in curbing misuse, they are worried that this might give rise to illegal manufacturers of the formulation.

Drug inspectors said that being a Schedule-H drug, Oxytocin formulation was sold by chemists when doctors prescription is produced. “Each ampule of it costs around `15 or less. However, there is always a chance that those who want to misuse it might produce fake prescriptions. But this would be checked as gazette notification states that the drug should not be sold by chemists,” a drug inspector said.

Life-saving drug
Oxytocin is one of the important drugs used by gynaecologists to stop bleeding during childbirth. A shortage of the drug is likely to cause problems. Now all hospitals will have to place an order with the Karnataka Antibiotics & Pharmaceuticals Ltd (KAPL) for the drug as it will not be available with retail chemists or any other manufacturer. Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology department at KIMS Cuddle Mother and Child Care Centre, Dr K Shilpi Reddy said that oxytocin is a must drug for labour support unless someone opts for natural delivery. When contacted, sources in TSMIDC said they have enough Oxytocin stock available with them. “Government hospitals will not fall short of drugs,” sources said.
