HYDERABAD: In light of a severe shortage of Assistant Municipal Commissioners (AMCs) within the GHMC, the responsibility of managing the majority of the 150 Ward Offices will fall upon superintendents and a few senior assistants. Starting June 16, the four-tier system of administration in GHMC will come into effect, operationalising 150 ward offices across all six GHMC zones.
To ensure smooth functioning without hindering ward-level administration, over 60% of the ward offices will be overseen by superintendents due to the lack of adequate AMCs. GHMC Commissioner DS Lokesh Kumar has already issued orders appointing 94 superintendents as in-charge Ward Administrative Officers (WAOs) of ward offices, while the remaining 56 will be managed by AMCs.As a majority of the ward offices will not have AMCs, the GHMC requested the government to promote 86 superintendents to the rank of AMCs, but the matter is pending.
In Serilingampally zone, of the 15 wards, only four have AMCs, while the remaining 11 are overseen by superintendents. Similarly, in the Charminar zone comprising 36 wards, only 13 AMCs have been designated as WAOs, leaving the remaining 23 wards to be managed by superintendents and senior assistants. In the Secunderabad zone with 27 wards, 13 are supervised by superintendents. Additionally, in the Kukatpally zone, 12 out of 22 wards are assigned to superintendents.
The situation is the same in Khairatabad zone, where 17 out of 27 WAOs are superintendents, and in LB Nagar zone where the majority of WAOs are also superintendents.GHMC officials said that it was crucial to ensure the uninterrupted functioning of ward offices despite the shortage of AMCs.
