At least two people were killed and one person was injured after a multi-storey building collapsed in Anjaiah Nagar, Gachibowli, Hyderabad, on Saturday.
Rescue operations are underway as authorities clear the rubble to check whether more people remain trapped.
Sources said an unauthorised seven-storey (G+6) under-construction building collapsed in Anjaiah Nagar, within the Madhapur police station limits. The building was reportedly constructed on a 50-square-yard plot adjacent to a nala. The deceased were suspected to have been working at the site.
Locals said debris from the collapsed building fell onto an adjacent structure, damaging it as well. Three bedrooms were reportedly damaged. In one of the affected houses, a man identified as Ramana Reddy was present when the debris fell. He sustained injuries and was shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Cyberabad Municipal Commissioner G Srijana said a complaint had been received against the building nearly six months ago. Following the complaint, officials stopped the construction and seized the building. However, construction resumed on Friday (August 21), after remaining halted for four months.
“Before we came here, the incident had happened. It was very unfortunate,” the commissioner said.
Locals alleged that they had previously complained about the unauthorised construction but that no action was taken.
Upon receiving the information, rescue teams from HYDRAA, the NDRF, fire services and the police reached the spot and launched rescue operations. The operation is currently underway.
