With a career spanning more than two decades, Moroccan-American rapper French Montana has become one of hip-hop’s most recognisable names, known for his infectious hooks, collaborations with some of the biggest names in global music and chart-topping hits such as Unforgettable, No Stylist and Pop That. Born Karim Kharbouch, the rapper has also made his mark with albums including Jungle Rules, Montana and They Got Amnesia, establishing a sound that blends his Moroccan roots with contemporary American hip-hop. French Montana brought that distinctive sound to Hyderabad as he headlined Royal Stag BoomBox, The Original Sound of the Generation, at Gachibowli Stadium. His energetic set had the crowd grooving to his popular tracks and celebrating his music. Following his performance, CE caught up with the rapper to talk about his Hyderabad experience, the evolution of rap, changing trends and his enduring passion for music.
How was your experience performing in Hyderabad?
It was my first time performing in Hyderabad, and the experience has been beautiful. Thank you for having me here. I had a great time performing solo on stage. A lot of hits were played back-to-back, everyone was enjoying themselves.
What are your thoughts on the latest trends in rap?
Every day there is a new trend in hip-hop, and we get to know about them through social media. It is a great thing, but golden music lasts forever. I think we should focus more on music than trends.
How do you think rap has changed over the years?
Rap has changed because now all you have to do is have a trend and have a moment with the labels behind you. But when that moment is gone, you are not really an artist. I think people should focus more on artist development. Going back to how things were done in the past is how you actually make superstars. You need to develop artists.
Can you share one of the best rap songs you have worked on?
They are all my babies. All of them are close to my heart.
How do you see the rap culture in India?
I am seeing it right now. I have performed in India for a wedding before. I only performed one song, and the response from the people was great.
What is one compliment that has stayed with you?
“This too shall pass.” (Laughs)
What keeps you motivated?
Doing what I love. It is not work when you are doing what you love. That is what keeps me motivated.
What inspires you about rap & music?
My passion. It is my getaway and the thing that helped me blossom. I get to travel around the world because I rap and work with my favourite artists.
What does music mean to you?
For me, music means life.
