KOCHI: Colours have a definite impact on our mind and in feng shui, colours play a vital role in creating overall balance and harmony. Colours can be used to counter defects and afflictions in a situation where renovation or re-designing of the layout is difficult.

Colour exists everywhere, especially in nature. Have you ever wondered where the rainbow and its colours come from? Are you aware that each colour has a different frequency and a different wavelength? A rainbow is formed as light passes through moisture (water drops which act as prisms) in the atmosphere. The rays are ‘bent’ and form a rainbow. Of the colours of the rainbow, red has the longest wavelength and the slowest rate of vibration, while violet has the shortest wavelength and the quickest rate of vibration.

Although we normally recognise colour with the gift of sight, there have also been studies which show that some individuals without sight, as well as many psychics, can identify a colour by its vibration levels. In short the right colours in the right places in your home transform the energy of the place and give you a feel of positive vibrations. At times you may not like a specific colour on the walls of your home, but that colour could be discreetly contributing towards a positive feel within the home.

Different colours have varied effects on your mood and your life. Red can have a stimulating effect on your heart and circulation. Red builds up red blood cells and also stimulates the adrenal glands. Pink provides a more gentle stimulation and helps the muscles relax. Orange stimulates the reproductive organs, helps the digestive system and strengthens the immune system, including the spleen, lungs and pancreas.

Yellow stimulates the brain, and helps you stay alert and decisive and evokes clear thinking. It strengthens the nervous system and creates energy in the muscles. Green has a positive effect on the heart. It encourages physical equilibrium and relaxation. It helps to balance and regulate our circulation and stimulates the pituitary gland and assists in the breathing process.

Blue is linked to the throat chakra and thyroid gland. It also encourages a healthy skeletal system and balances blood pressure.

Turquoise has a pragmatic affiliation with the thymus gland, which keeps infections away. Turquoise is beneficial to frayed nerves and the immune system. Indigo has been found to have narcotic qualities, and some doctors in Texas have used indigo light to induce anaesthesia for minor operations.

Violet affects the brain and the nervous system. It can cool heat rash and sunburn. Violet also suppresses hunger and balances the body’s metabolism.

Adapting the right colours for the interior of a building not only ensures correct feng shui application, but is a vital key in activating good feng shui.
