KOCHI: It’s going to be one of the most memorable experiences for an art lovers in Kochi. The evergreen love story of Saramma and Kesavan Nair, skillfully portrayed by the couple Amalraj and Lakshmi Amal will see its 100th stage on Friday.

‘Premalekhanam,’ the touching story of love and hope from legendary writer Vaikom Muhammed Basheer, which has been made into a visual narrative by Soorya Krishnamoorthy, will be staged at Hotel Sarovaram on Friday at 6.30 pm. Earlier the play was staged across the state, in  major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai and in Dubai, Muscat and Abu Dhabi.

The staging of Premalekhanam has always been a special experience for both the actors and the audience. The characters - Saramma and Kesavan Nair - are being portrayed by two people who have been in love for a long time and finally decided to live together. Now their three-year-old child Ayush Dev is the  main critic and viewer during rehearsals.

“It has been a different experience in my theatre career. On each stage we experienced some difference and won appreciation from the crowd. Both the elite and the common audiences like the play alike. And the most interesting experience was when we staged the play at Poojappura Jail where Basheer wrote this play in 1943,” said Amal.

“Being two individuals in love and with similar thoughts and tastes we always enjoyed doing this play. And of course being husband and wife helped for the synchronised acting for the play,” said Lakshmi. The script for the play is from Basheer Manakkad while the creative support in the background is being given by Shijinath and Krishnan. Manoj Chandran is the stage manager.

The prestigious play from Soorya was inaugurated in Thiruvananthapuram by Adoor Gopalakrishnan. The play is being staged as part of an attempt to spread the message of communal harmony. Mammootty who will inaugurate the 100th stage will symbolically light a traditional lamp at the end of the play to spread the message of the play.  The audience will take a light from this lamp. A photo exhibition is also being organised as part of the show.
