KOCHI: A meeting to commemorate Mercy Ravi, the late Congress leader, was held at the Town Hall here on Wednesday.

The meeting organised by the District Congress Committee was inaugurated by Opposition Leader Oommen Chandy. On the occasion, Chandy said that Mercy Ravi was a leader worth emulating.

“She was a social servant whom others must emulate.  Her sincerity and concern for the people and her dedication to their causes was what made her different and endeared  her to the people from all sections,” Chandy said.

The distance between people and leaders must narrow down, and the leaders working with the people, those whom the people trust, were the need of the hour. Mercy was such a leader, a political leader whom everyone working in public sphere could emulate, Chandy said.

M Leelavati, who gave the commemorative speech, said Mercy was a  brave leader who smiled even in pain and showed great courage in life.  She said Mercy’s autobiography ‘Nizhalai Maranam,’ was a fine literary work, which would touch the hearts of those who read it.

Yesteryear cine actress and former MP Sharada said that her only regret regarding her relationship with Mercy was that she got to know her very late. She said that instead of feeling sad, we must feel good remembering the happy moments spent with her.

The meeting was attended by Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs, Vayalar Ravi, Congress leaders and party workers.
