Dramatic scenes unfolded in front of the Family Court here on Friday after actors Urvashi and Manoj K Jayan reached the court in connection with the case regarding the custody of their daughter Kunjatta.
Manoj alleged that Urvashi was under the influence of alcohol. He brought the issue to the notice of the court through his counsel.
Though the court first refused to consider the allegation by Manoj’s counsel, following repeated requests, the judge summoned Manoj, Urvashi and her counsel to the chamber.
The court was convinced that Urvashi was under the influence of alcohol. It is learnt that following this, Urvashi stormed out of the chamber.
The court granted the custody of the girl to Manoj, after Kunjatta told the court that she did not want to go with her mother. “I don’t want to go with my mother. She is always drunk and I am scared to go with her,” the 12-year-old submitted in writing.
The High Court order is that Urvashi should be given the custody of Kunjatta on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 am to 4 pm. Urvashi came to the court to receive the child from Manoj.
Since the High Court order is in force, the girl has to be produced before the court on Saturday also. However, Urvashi’s counsel denied the allegation and maintained that the actor’s body was weak from medication and lack of sleep.
“Her blood pressure had gone down and she appeared quite weak. She has been battling certain illnesses for the past few years,” counsel told ‘Express’.
“She left the court heartbroken. She was looking forward to taking Kunjatta for shopping at Gold Souk Mall on Friday.
The judge asked us to take her to the hospital since she appeared to be weak,” counsel said adding that Urvashi was willing to undergo a medical examination to prove that she was not drunk.
“A medical report will be produced before the court, if needed,” counsel said. Meanwhile, talking to ‘Express’ over the phone Manoj stuck to the allegation and said that Urvashi has always had a drinking problem, “I have been battling with myself on whether to speak out about the situation for many years.
“Today’s incident was enough proof that she is not fit to be a mother for my daughter. That is why I told her to write a statement saying she did not want to go with Urvashi,” he said.
