Adding another facility to its credit, a Unani medicine clinic will start functioning in Kumbalangi panchayat on July 2.
This will be the second such clinic in the state. As of now, the Unani clinic in Edathala panchayat is the only such clinic in Kerala.
The new clinic, set up under the Union Ministry of Health, will be inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies K V Thomas.
Originated in Greece, Unani medicine first arrived in India around 12-13 century with the establishment of Delhi Sultanate and Muslim rule in North India and subsequently flourished under Mughal Empire.
The service of two Unani physicians will be available at the clinic, said Kumbalangi panchayat president Usha Pradeep. The panchatyat has provided space for the clinic while the doctors will be appointed by the Central Government.
“At present, around 300 patients from Kumbalangi, mostly those suffering from body or joint pains, are going to the clinic at Edathala for treatment. This has prompted us to think of setting up a clinic in our panchayat itself. After getting the clearance of the panchayat council we approached K V Thomas with the demand, she said.
