ANGAMALY: The state’s largest ophthalmic institute has started functioning at the eye care complex in Little Flower Hospital here. The newly launched eye care complex has eight operation theatres equipped with all the modern facilities required to carry out 200 eye surgeries a day. The complex also consists of nine super speciality eye clinics.

With the completion of the complex, the centre has become the largest ophthalmic institute in the state, said Fr Vadakkumpadan, director of Little Flower Hospital and the president Eye Bank Association of Kerala.

Indian Eye Bank Association president Dr Usha Gopinath inaugurated speciality complex. She pointed out that this facility is the first ever private eye bank in the country. She said that it is a proud fact that the eye bank at Angamaly is one of the ideal eye banks in the country and is known for its services. It has also received recognition from the government.

Dr Usha also said that even though the state has a highly educated population, the number of people willing to donate eyes is far less than the people donating other organs like kidney.

Also, the office of Eye Bank Association of Kerala has been shifted to the eye care complex at the hospital. Fr Sebastian Vadakkumpadan presided over the inaugural event which was held last week. Renowned actress Poornima Indrajith was the chief guest. The country-director of SightLife, a US based eye care organisation, Manoj Gulati, DMO Dr R Sudhakaran, Little Flower Hospital administrator P V Thomas, Medical Superintendent Dr Cheriyan Joseph and K V Paul also present at the occasion.
