Parikshit Maharaja commemoration meet held

Noted historian and director general of the Centre for Heritage Studies M G S Narayanan has said that, during the time of the British rule, Parikshit Maharaja had given importance to Sanskrit when people were striving to learn English.

He was speaking at the commemorative ceremony of Parikshit Maharaja, organised by the Centre for Heritage Studies, at Tripunithura Hill Palace on Tuesday. “Using his in-depth knowledge of Sanskrit, the Maharaja had displayed the commitment to popularise Sanskrit among people by encouraging them to learn the language,” he said.

“Parikshit Maharaja was not reluctant to support Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Patel’s efforts to integrate Kochi into the Indian Union,” he pointed out.M G S Narayanan, members of the Cochin royal family and Hill Palace officials paid homage to Parikshit Maharaja. Sanskrit Pandit V Venkitasarma handed over the Parikshit Thampuran Awards to T Aryadevi, A P Unni and Poonthottam Sankara Narayanan Namboothiri.

Tripunithura municipal chairman R Venugopal, Centre for Cultural Studies dean M G Sasibhooshan and Cochin royal family member Elamana Hari were present.
