Technodrive, the job recruitment drive organised by the District Employment Exchange, drew surprising responses with more than 6000 candidates thronging on the premises of the district panchayat headquarters on Monday.
The registration process came to a standstill within a couple of hours from the commencement of the event, unable to contain the onslaught of candidates.
Even the application forms had run out within a few hours. The venue had to be extended by about 20,000 square feet, forcing the organisers to shift a part of the venue to the Civil Station ground. The enthusiasm was by no means restricted to the candidates.
While the Employment Exchange had declared 14 companies for the drive with a combined job opening of 1200, the number went much higher during the course of the drive. Several companies joined in on the spot during the event, so much so that the organisers had to finally refuse three companies entry owing to space crunch.
“We saw a participation of about 6300 students. We have never seen this kind of huge turn out. During the last job exchange conducted in January and the one that was conducted in June last year, the number of participants was just about 1200-1500. The number of companies that participated is also higher now,”, said the District Employment Officer, M N Prabhakaran. The major chunk of candidates were fresh pass-outs from Engineering colleges.
“Even while some companies demanded ITI students or diploma holders, it was mostly engineering candidates who approached them. Ninety percent of the candidates were B Tech graduates,”, he said. Companies from Infopark, CEZ, BPO’s along with a few Ship-building companies participated in the drive.
