

In an bid to reduce noise pollution in the city, No-Honking Day, an initiative by the Young Indians (Yi), the youth wing of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) was observed in Kochi on Wednesday. To create awareness on the ill effects of excessive honking, volunteers stuck ‘Horn Not OK Please’ stickers on vehicles. The imitative had the support of the Motor Vehicles Department.
Joint RTO Adarsh Kumar G Nair inaugurated the campaign at Panampilly Nagar Junction. “Yi volunteers were present at 12 locations in and around the city including at Tripunithura. They stopped vehicles, stuck stickers and explained to the drivers about the evils of honking,” Adarsh Kumar said.
Volunteers were also present at Palarivattom, Vyttila, Madhava Pharmacy junction to explain the benefits of keeping off the horns. Besides, vehicle drivers were given stringers to be hung on their rear view mirrors to remind them to keep off honking.
And those who were caught by student volunteers on the No-Honking Day had a sweet experience. “Students gave them chocolates before briefing them about the negative aspects of honking,” said the joint RTO.
Young Indians (Yi) has been working on the flagship environment programme ‘Horn Not OK Please’ for the past three yrs. During this period, the campaign went viral across all platforms, even online. With an increased awareness on the ills of using vehicular horns and its contribution to noise pollution, Yi was able to achieve great strides in the area, said officials.
There is a lot more to be achieved through a sustained campaign in the coming years,” they said.
