With hardly two weeks left for Christmas, Muthu, the crib maker from Palakkad, and his team members have reached Kochi with readymade cribs. Muthu is targeting the urban people who are busy with their tight schedule but likes to set up a crib at home. Muthu and co-workers make portable cribs using bamboo and all that you need is to buy one and decorate it with lights and ribbons.
Muthu has been making a living out of this business in Kochi for the last four seasons. According to him, ready-made cribs high demand among the people of Kochi as they easy to handle. He belongs to a community which has expertise in making structures using bamboo and cane. “We weave baskets during the off-season,” says Muthu. The cost of Muthu’s readymade crib ranges from Rs150 -200.
“These cribs are quite good in quality and very affordable,” said a customer. These cribmakers also aid the wholesalers in replenishing the stock. Prakash, another member of the group says that they take up orders and even make assorted stars.
