At a time when crime rate in the state is on a rise, Dr Omana Edadan, a notorious medico who was arrested for killing a man and cutting his body into pieces nearly 17 years ago and jumped her bail, is still on the run.
More than a decade ago, a red corner notice was issued by Interpol through the CBI, New Delhi, but it is pending. The neighbours of Omana at Karuvachery in Payyannur still remember her face.
“It was shocking and unbelievable that a doctor could have done such a barbarous act. Earlier, the Tamil Nadu police used to come and inquire whether anybody had visited the house. Now, no officials come. The house has been converted into a women’s hostel,” a resident told ‘Express’.
Payyannur CI C A Abdul Rahim said: “Her house is in the jurisdiction of our police station. It is an old case and there is no inquiry from the Tamil Nadu police.” The gruesome murder had happened in the dark night of July 11, 1996, in the retiring room of Ooty railway station.
Omana, an ophthalmologist, killed her lover Muralidharan of Payyannur by injecting poison. She then chopped his body into pieces and stuffed them in a suitcase. After failing to throw the suitcase off a gorge, she hired a taxi to Kodaikanal.
However, the driver got suspicious and alerted the police. The Kodaikanal police arrested her and transferred the case to Ooty police.
A charge sheet was filed in the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, Ooty, in June, 1998. Thereafter, the accused dragged the trial for want of copies in Malayalam or English, sources said.
The court had issued a non-bailable warrant against sureties and sincere efforts were taken to execute the non-bailable warrant. But she went missing on January 21, 2001.
The court declared her as proclaimed offender and the notification was published in all leading Tamil and Malayalam dailies.
She was then placed on Interpol’s wanted list.
She has been charged under Sections 364 (kidnapping or abducting in order to murder), 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence) of IPC.
According to the source, she had reportedly gone to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.
