For cleaners and conductors in private bus, who dress up in colourful clothes, it is time to change the garb. For, the Motor Vehicles Department  has begun monitoring the private bus employees who are flouting norms.

Though MVD officials say that had already carrying out inspections in this regard, the decision to intensify the drive was reportedly taken after the issue came up for discussion at the meeting of the district development committee last week.

As per the rule, conductors and cleaners should wear khakhi and should bear a name board. “Displaying the name of the employee is essential. When a passenger comes up with a complaint against a conductor or a cleaner, the complainant has to mention the registration number of the bus and the name of the employee against whom the allegation is levelled,” said Regional Transport Officer, Ernakulam, B J Antony.

He added that the MVD had already started inspection to check wheather the norms are being followed. “As per the rule, the fine for not wearing uniform and name boards is just Rs 100, said the RTO. “However, now onwards conductors and cleaners will have to produce the name boards before the MVD official concerned to resume work, if they caught once,” Antony said.

The uniform and displaying of name board is not a new norm. But, it has been remaining on papers. The issue was raised at the DDC meeting as complaints, especially by women and girl passengers are on the rise. “We have got information that more than  one cleaners work on the same door. These labourers  never wear  uniforms or name boards. When the issue was raised at the meeting the MVD officials have promised to take action,” said M P Sivadathan, a member of DDC.
