Eight T-girders weighing 28 tonnes each were installed on the newly-constructed pillars at north RoB on Thursday night.
The girders, about 11m long, were installed at the Town Hall-end of the bridge using a computerised crane owned by Rocky Transport and Crane Services. These were made at the yard at Manapatty Parambu a month ago. Each girder installation took at least five minutes, said DMRC officials. Eight girders were placed between six pillars. The officials said that each pillar supports two girders.
Traffic was diverted between 10.30 pm and 5 am at the bridge to facilitate the installation.
Vehicles going to Kaloor were diverted through the Pullepady bridge, whereas those coming from Kaloor were diverted through the Pullepady bridge as well as the AL Jacob RoB. Officials said girders on the other side of the bridge will be installed by Wednesday once the work on the pillars is completed.
They expect the bridge to be commissioned by October-end.
