My Father and My Son, a  2005 Turkish drama written and directed by Cagman Irmak, will be screened in Kochi on Friday.

It is about a family torn apart by the 1980 Turkish coup. The film which went on nation-wide release in 2005 became one of the highest-grossing Turkish films in history.

It revolves around  a journalist, Sadik. He is one of the rebellious youth who has been politically active as a university student and became a left-wing journalist in the 70s, despite his father’s expectations of him becoming an agricultural engineer and taking control of their family farm in an Aegean village.  On the dawn of September 12, 1980, when a merciless military coup hits the country, they cannot find access to any hospital or a doctor and his wife dies while giving birth to their only child, Deniz. After a long-lasting period of torture, trials, and jail time, Sadik returns to his village with Deniz who is aged about eight years, knowing that it would be hard to correct things with his father, Huseyin.

The show of the 108-minute film at the Ernakulam Children’s theatre will commence at 6. 30 pm. A documentary produced by the Public Relations Department will be shown prior to the screening.

The screening will be in the International film festival on Fridays as part of the year-long weekend art programme organised by the district administration which commenced on July 5.

The film festival is being organised jointly by district administration district information office and District Tourism Promotion Council in association with Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy.

Those interested can reserve seats in advance, said District Collector P I Sheikh Pareeth.
