In a bid to step up the speed of trains plying in the Thiruvananthapuram division, the railway officials have said that the restriction on the permissible speed of trains would be lifted this year.

According to Thiruvananthapuram divisional railway manager Rajesh Agarwal, the current average speed of trains in the division is 80 kms/hr, making it one of the slowest divisions under the Southern Railways. The Thrissur-Guruvayur sector lags well behind every other sector of the Thiruvananthapuram division with an average train speed of only 50 to 80 km/hr.

Agarwal said that plans are afoot to increase the speed of trains to around 110 km/hr. The first phase of the plan would be implemented at the Thrissur-Guruvayur stretch.
