KOCHI: Ayiroor Sadasivan could find an immortal space in the hearts of the lovers of nostalgic Malayalam film songs with just one song. Though his career in cinema lasted a decade with 26 songs from 20 films, the first song he rendered for the film Chayam in 1972 made him an unforgettable name in the film dome.
The song was special to Vayalar Ramavarma, the master lyricist as he had written the lines beginning ‘Amme Amme,’ not for any film but in dedication to his mother with whom he was deeply attached. It was later included in the film Chayam when P N Menon decided to direct a script by bureaucrat- writer Malayattoor Ramakrishnan. G Devarajan who filled music chose Sadasivan to sing the lyrics in which he placed mother above the almighty, for the role she plays in the evolution of the human race. Sadasivan crooned the lines with his heart and soon it cut chord with the Malayali psyche for the praise of motherhood. He was born into a family of artists and musicians. His grandfather Krishnan Achary was a painter and kathakali singer associated with the palace and two sisters of his father were music teachers.
Career Start
He started his career with the famous troupe Changanassery Geetha with ace musician M K Arjunan.
Though he could associate with the masters of the industry, his career was shadowed by a series of misfortunes and his life would have been different if the hit song, ‘Sanyasini’ had reached the theatres in his voice. Sadasivan sang the song tuned by Devarjan for the film Rajahamsam. However the conflict between two recording studios marred the melody and his song failed to be a part of the film.
Singing Ban
His career as a singer in the films came to a halt following a ban imposed by the Chalachitra Parishad in connection with a star night organised by Bombay Malayali Association in 1982. He had set music for a film Vipanchika later.Incidentally, his last film was titled Pampanadi, the river on the banks where he was born.
The Changanassery police said that the incident happened around 7.45 am when the car in which Sadasivan was travelling fell into a marshy paddy field, near Onnampalam, at Manackchira.
