KOCHI:  Over the past few years, the word, CRIME, has been reinforcing its position in the statistics of the Crime Control Bureaus of the state like never before. The official statistics also revealed that despite the various measures launched by the police to tackle the rising number of crimes, there has been no major respite in the cases being reported in the state.

But all that is now going to change, the state police are only a touch-of-the-button away at times of distress. The police launched an IT-based solution for residents that can be used to alert the enforcement agencies while distress situations. The distress signal can be sent with the help of a ‘spider red button’, which would then send an SOS to the authorities concerned.

The Kerala Police introduced a new system titled ‘Spider Red Button System’ also known as Red Button Public Robotic Spectrum (RBPRS) which is an intelligent robotic terminal built to assist public to reach out to the cops 24/7 without any fear or downtime at the click of a Red Button.

The police have set in place a lot of traditional means for the people to reach out to them. But now, they have introduced the latest technology, with which the younger generation is more acquainted, in keeping with the changing times. The pilot launching of the system was conducted by Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala at the Aluva Bus stand premises on Tuesday.

According to Yathish Chandra GH, IPS, District Police Chief, Aluva, this is for the first time in the country that such intelligent robotic terminals are being installed in public places for public safety and assistance. The terminals being installed at city spaces will allow the public to register their complaints by just speaking out after pressing a red button on the system. This information then gets passed on along with 360 degree photographs of the location to the police control room.

A hotline telephone link will automatically open up for the person who presses the red button to talk to the Police Control Centre.

Red Button is a great safety empowerment for women. Any lady or girl in distress can press the red button without fear of disclosing their identity or telephone number, said Yathish Chandra.

This technology is provided free of cost by the Red Button Company without any expenses to the government. A pilot project has been initiated by the Home department to study the utility of these robotic terminals. Initially, few terminals will be installed in the district.

The authorities hope to get more alerts from people in the coming days about the happenings in the regions so that they can take preventive measures.

If the new system turns out be a success, similar devices will be launched in other parts of the state, said police officials.
