KOCHI: Pause for a moment and listen before you raise eyebrows over my statement that ‘Kochi does not need the proposed Cancer Centre,’ said director Sreenivasan.

The actor/director, who has many films of contemporary relevance to his credit, is planning to make a movie to create awareness among the public on healthy living and keeping diseases, including the big C, at bay.

“It is an immediate project. I am working on a script that is related to cancer, and the plot of the film will deal with measures to keep the disease away.

“ It will tell what cancer patients need to do, and how results of the cancer researches conducted in Kerala were manipulated for protecting the vested interests of a particular ‘section’,” Sreenivasan told ‘Express’. When asked who were the ‘section,’ he said laughingly, “it is not a story, but facts.”

The actor, who recently ventured into farming and is leading a campaign to woo more and more people into farming so as to ensure food safety, said he was not against providing free treatment to poor cancer patients, but was spreading awareness on the importance of taking preventive measures.

“I am clear about what I am going to do, and I am talking on the basis of facts. I am ready to share the facts with those who are ‘capable of taking action’ - those in power like the Chief Minister and Health Minister.

“But, no one has approached me yet. Also, I wish that such details be made public through my movie,” the actor said on a lighter note.

“So many things are related to cancer, which I have learnt from reading and observation. In many part of the world, cancer is not a nightmare. Researchers around the world have come up with results that are beneficial to the public. In Kerala, however, it is not the case.

“That is why I am willing to expose the truth,” he added.

Meanwhile, he answered ‘yes’ when asked whether a hospital in the government sector was needed in Kochi to provide treatment to poor cancer patients, as preventive measures would take many years to have the desired results.
