Students Spar at Model United Nation

KOCHI: Indian International Model United Nations is a student run organisation incepted in the year 2012. Within a time span of just four years IIMUN was crowned ‘Asia’s Largest Youth Conference’ and ‘World’s Largest Residential Conference’ and in 2015 it is ‘The first conference to have a city to itself’. IIMUN is an invite only conference, where the top institutes engage in contending for the Best Delegation Trophy.

After the huge success achieved by its Kottayam Chapter in November, IIMUN’s conference began in Kochi at Choice School on Friday. The meet was inaugurated by IIMUN founder and president Rishab Shah. This conference, in which it is expected that over 400 students will participate, will conclude on Sunday.

IIMUN simulates the working of United Nations and the Indian Parliament in 100 cities across the country and makes students discuss issues such as terrorism, hunger and economics.

The main agenda being discussed in this conference is getting India a permanent seat in the Security Council, a topic which is being lobbied hard by the Prime Minister and External Affairs Minister in the actual United Nations.

In previous years, the conferences conducted by IIMUN have been attended by various luminaries like UN Secretary General Ban-Ki-Moon, UN Under Secretary General Peter Launsky, Director of United Nations Information Service, Martin Nesirky, former UN Under Secretary General Shashi Tharoor, Kiran Bedi,  Bollywood actors like Vidya Balan, Imran Khan, Rahul Bose and Vir.

What is MUN?

A Model United Nations (MUN) conference is a simulation of international parliaments of   the UN wherein the roles of the diplomats and ambassadors are played by the students. Each student represents one country and discusses the agenda at hand and together formulates solutions to these world problems in the form of resolutions.

There will be a DJ session from 6 to 7 p.m on Saturday. The closing ceremony will be held on Sunday at 6 pm at the school.
