Collector orders demolition of shaky structure

KOCHI: District Collector K Mohammed Y Safeerulla has issued orders for demolishing the dilapidated building complex at Asraj Colony in Mattanchery under the provisions of Disaster Management Act. The move follows the reports submitted by Kochi tahsildar and Fire and Rescue Services Department. 
The crumbling building was identified during an inspection. It had also turned dangerous for people. 
Safeerulla vowed steps to ensure the safety of people. He had visited the site earlier. 

“The debris will be handed over to the Motor Vehicles Department(MVD). It will be used in the construction of the new driving test track at Willington Island and the Regional Transport Office(RTO) had made a request in this regard,” said a release.  

The District Nirmithi Kendra has been entrusted with the demolition work. 
“If any valuables are recovered during the demolition process it will be handed over to the Nirmithi Kendra. The price of these materials will be attached to the government. If items of archaeological value are found, the departments concerned will be alerted,” the Collector said.

The debris should be removed by the MVD at own risk and people need not have safety concerns on this front. Besides, the Village Officer should ensure the materials will be used only for construction of the driving test facility.  During demolition, services of Fire and Rescue Department should be ensured and demolition will take place under tahsildar’s supervision, the Collector’s order said.
The original occupants of Asraj building, which dates back to the pre-Independence days, migrated to Pakistan following partition.
