KWA cleans clarifier

EMERGENCY maintenance works were carried out at the 72-mld water treatment plant of the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) at Aruvikkara from Sunday morning after shutting down the plant. One among the three clarifiers were cleaned. One is already functioning and the other one will start functioning within 10 days.

All the machinery will be replaced within the next 20 days, said an official. The control valves were repaired so that raw water is equally distributed to the filter beds. The shutter of a raw water pump which was not working was repaired. And the pumping was expected to be restarted by early hours of Monday.

Though the KWA had also planned to paint the electric poles at the sub-station, it could not be completed because of heavy rains in the evening. It can done only during another shutdown, an official said. The shutdown became inevitable following the steep fall in the quantity and quality of water supplied from the plant due to the poor condition of the machinery.
