THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A youth was killed and three others, including Congress leader Rajmohan Unnithan’s son, were injured after the car in which they were travelling rammed into the compound wall of the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport here on Sunday afternoon.

The deceased has been identified as Mithun Markose, 25, son of Rayan Markose of Vettucaud. He died on the spot.

Those injured are Rajmohan Unnithan’s son Akhil, 24, a resident of Poojappura, and his friends Raygan, 26, and Jackson, 23, both hailing from Vettucaud. While Akhil was admitted to the Medical College Hospital the others were admitted to a private hospital.

According to the city traffic police, the accident occurred near the fire station of the airport on the All Saints’-Shangumugham stretch.

Mithun was driving the Toyota Corolla car which is owned by his father.

Mithun was suspected to have lost control of the vehicle while negotiating the curve near the airport fire station and, as a result, the vehicle rammed into the compound wall.

The compound wall and the vehicle were badly damaged in the impact of the collision.

While the police sources said that over-speeding was the cause of the accident and the victims were under the influence of alcohol, the local people alleged that all those in the car were in an inebriated state. They were also alleged to be involved in a race with another car.

Being a straight stretch, the All Saints’-Shagumugham stretch is a favourite racing spot of youngsters and it is posing a threat to the nearby residents, said the local people.
