THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar opined that it was not fair to equate caste-based social reservation with economic reservation.
Inaugurating the annual conference of the Kerala Pulayar Maha Sabha (KPMS) here on Sunday, she said that that though many other countries witnessed economic discrimination, India was faced with the problem of social discrimination. Social discrimination was a great challenge to Indian democracy. This was why social or caste-based reservation was introduced in the country, she said. Food Minister C. Divakaran who spoke at the meeting said the State Government would take steps to solve the genuine problems raised by KPMS.
Union Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor, Opposition Leader Oommen Chandy and Kodikunnil Suresh MP, A Sampath MP, Mons Joseph MLA, K.K. Saju MLA, KPMS general secretary Punnala Sreekumar and KPMS president R.S. Babu attended the function.
KPMS meeting also decided to continue with the anti-Left stand adopted by the organisation recently.
