Charkha is the humble yet mighty symbol of Gandhiji’s principles on self-sufficiency. Ever wondered what it must have taken the Mahatma to weave his ideologies into the psyche of masses with his humble weapon? To know more about charkha, its evolution, its existence post-Gandhi and its influence upon several families who make a living out of it, the Kerala Gandhi Smaraka Nidhi has come up with a new venture.

A charkha museum that takes one through its history weaving together the story of Mahatma and his struggle to win India her freedom.

The small museum, a single-room one,  was inaugurated by Tara Gandhi Bhattacharjee, granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi and Vice Chairperson of Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samithi, Delhi, on Monday morning on the premises of Gandhi Bhavan.

Though the museum has a long way to go, it would be one major attraction at the Gandhi Bhavan in the coming year, Gandhians said.

From the kisan charkha which was popularised by the Mahatma to the eight and twelve spin charkhas now used, as many as eight charkhas have been displayed here. A lot of photographs have also found place on the walls.

The coming days would see it being developed, KGSN officials said.
