Finally, thousands of students belonging to Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV) schools in the country can get a glimpse of their new uniforms. The design of the new uniform of KV which goes for a change almost 50 years after its inception, was released by KV Sangathan on its website on July 5, much to the delight of students, parents and teachers.

The white and blue combination uniform has given way to a mix of blue, grey, white and red. And by the looks of it, the patterns designed by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) are set to make a splash with the kids.

There are separate uniform patterns for the summer and winter station schools. Kerala comes under the summer stations. Dr Dineshkumar, Additional Commissioner (Academics) of KV Sangathan, says in the circular issued on July 3 that the new uniforms are being introduced on the eve of the golden jubilee year of KV. And that the old and new uniforms may continue to be used simultaneously during the transition period for classes II to XI.

‘’Parents of class I students may be instructed to get the uniform stitched for their wards as per the new uniform design. Students of class XII shall continue with the existing uniform if they so desire as they will be passing out at the end of this academic year,’’ reads the circular.

The designs have used mandarin collar shirts which are a blend of blue, grey, white and red checks for boys. Junior boys will get to wear the shirt with plain grey shorts, while seniors will have grey trousers. Girls will have three types of uniforms, for junior, middle and senior levels.

It will be blue, grey, white and red checkered tunic with a princess Peter Pan collar for junior girls; for middle classes, girls will get to wear the checkered shirt with normal collar and plain grey skirt with broad box pleats in the front and back and divided red stripe at the hem. Senior girls will wear ‘kurti’ and trousers.

The new uniform has been designed to remain contemporary and to provide a unique identity to its students, all the while keeping the comfort, cost and availability factors in view, the KV circular says. Detailed description of the uniform along with pictures and the type of fabric to be used have also been specified.
