Book Fest venue to host seminars, cultural events

Author M T Vasudevan Nair will inaugurate the book festival organised by the State Institute of Children’s Literature in connection with the Viswa Malayala Mahotsavam at Kanakakkunnu Palace grounds on October 30.

Shashi Tharoor M P will preside over the function which will be attended by Kerala Sahitya Akademi President Perumbadavam Sreedharan, Secretary R Gopalakrishnan, Institute of Children’s Literature Director Thumbamon Thomas and others.

Ten Malayalam titles published in 2010 and 2011 will be chosen for literary awards instituted as part for the festival. Awards will be given in the categories of novel, poetry, translation, travelogue, biography, autobiography, crticism and so on.

Among the books to be awarded are ‘Maru Piravi’ by Sethu, ‘Brindayude Theekuppayam’, ‘Ente Jeevitham, by Kallen Pokkudan, ‘Utharadhunika Charchakal’ by Prasannarajan, ‘Oru Cinema Kadhayile Nayakanum Avante Villanum’ by V Dileep, ‘Illa Njangalkkoru Prayasavum Illa’ by V D Krishnan, ‘Bhoomi Chuttupazhukkumbol’ by D V Cyril, ‘Jwalaakalapam’ by R Nandakumar, ‘Lumbiniyile Rajahamsam’ by Ramesh K P and ‘Keralavarma Pazhassi Raja’ by Peppin Thomas.

Day one of the festival will have a seminar on the aesthetics of children’s literature which will be attended by Sippi Pallipuram, Kuriase Kumbalakkuzhy, S Sivadas and others. R Anirudhan and K K Kochu will attend a seminar on the representation of Dalit life in Malayalam literature. ‘Marthoma Sandesham’, a ‘chavittu natakam’ will be staged at 7.30 pm.

On October 31, Culture Minister K C Joseph will give away prizes to the winners of the state -level painting competition held as part of the festival. He will also release 20 books publised by the Institute of Children’s Literature. Malayalam writer and National Book Trust Chairman A Sethumadhavan will attend the function. The seminar on biodiversity heritage will be attended by V N Rajasekharan Pillai, Kallen Pokkudan, C R Neelakantan and P V Karunakran. Seminar and presentations on traditional knowledge bases will follow.

T Padmanabhan will present awards to writers on Day 3 of the festival. MBS Youth Coir will present ‘Kairali Vandanam’ at the cultural eveining to be held from 6.30 onwards. Margi Raman Chakyar will present chakyarkoothu at 6.30 pm on November 2.
