A special lamp for fishing boats

City-based inventor K T Ajayakumar says his gas-based lamp has the luminosity of ten petromax lamps

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Fishing craft-merchant vessel conflicts during the past few weeks in Indian waters have prompted a city-based inventor to develop a gas-based high-luminosity lamp for fishing boats.

K T Ajayakumar of Asarivilakam House, Aramkallu, Vazhayila, says his lamp has the luminosity of ten petromax lamps.

‘’The two recent incidents in which the lives of fishermen were lost prompted me to develop the lamp. It functions on LPG, and the luminosity can be reduced or increased as per need. It is also considerably cheaper, compared to the ones available in the market,’’ Ajayakumar, who runs a gas stove repair shop alongside his home, said.

According to him, the lamp has been developed using easily available materials.

‘’The lamp works on a high-pressure system and will not go out in high winds. Now, fishermen use lamps fuelled by kerosene, diesel or petrol or they use electrical ones. They all have problems,’’ he said.

Ajayakumar has made news in the past by developing energy-efficient gas stoves and other gadgets.
