New Startup Project to Replace Wi-Fi with Li-Fi

It’s startup spree all around the state. Kerala had been witnessing a lot of young talents heading new companies. After the launch of Startup Village in Kochi, the State Government is on its way to support young entrepreneurs. New spark of ideas and new pool of talents have emerged from a college here.

Two final-year students of Sree Chitra Thirunal College of Engineering at Pappanamcode, Athul Sudheesh and Allan Tom Mathew of Electronics and Communication Department, are over the moon now with the launch of a new idea and transforming it into reality.

Dionz, founded by the duo, is believed to be one among the very few hardware startups in the state and in the nation itself.

The name is quite familiar to the new band of Kerala entrepreneurs right from its inception in October 2012.

Within a short span of time, the company was able to find a place among one of the top five campus startups which was rated by the Startup Village in Kochi.

“A small idea led to the formation of Dionz. The idea called Li-Fi was tested by a prestigious university in China.

They developed a visible light communication means which had 100 times more bandwidth than that of Wi-Fi,” says Athul and Allan, who are in their early twenties. This made the duo to research on the same. Dionz developed the prototype eight months ago using laboratory facilities at the college. The young team was keen to develop a better version that differs from the one made in China.

On April 2013, the basic prototype version was launched with much appreciation.

Li-Fi stands for Light Fidelity, a visible light communication system. Visible light from the spectrum is used for communication.

“This is far superior to Wi-Fi, as this technology has a bandwidth 100 times that of Wi-Fi modems. There will be no heating effect since they use visible light over microwave range signals for communication. By modulating LED light with data signal, the LED illumination can be used as a communication source in addition to the purpose of lighting system,” they said.

Athul Sudheesh, 21-year-old CEO, and one of the partners of Dionz said:”Our ambition is to replace traditional Wi-Fi modems with our product to reach the common man. Hopefully within a year or so, we would fulfill that. Since the light source is LED, lower consumption would also be an added value of this product. Apart from me and Allan, four employees who are also our college mates are working on this product to attain our goal,” he said.

The duo’s friendship started even before the formation of the company. As days passed after joining the college, friend circles shuffled and at last Allan and Athul became close friends.

They began to share their unique ideas in technology and came to know that they shared the same vision.

Athul hails from Varkala and Allan is from the city.

However, they are looking forward to bring out their product in Indian markets soon while completing their course. “Definitely,we will be into full time business,” they said.
